Is an Independent Agent Parallel World Forming
Somewhere between a product release and a sci‑fi premise, a quiet shift is underway: AI agents are starting to look less like tools and more like economic actors. They now hold their own wallets, earn their own income, and pay other machines directly, often without a human ever being in the loop.[1][2][3][4]
From “assistant” to account holder
In February, Coinbase launched Agentic Wallets, giving AI agents cryptographic wallets that can hold, trade, and spend funds autonomously on Base, all wired into Coinbase’s x402 protocol for machine-to-machine payments. x402 has already processed over 50 million transactions, turning a simple HTTP 402 (“payment required”) into a native way for agents to buy data, compute, or API access without human checkout flows. Polygon followed on March 5 with its Agent CLI, which founder Sandeep Nailwal described as “everything an agent needs to go onchain,” including wallets, swaps, bridging, and on-chain identity in a single toolkit.[2][3][4][5][6][1]
Agents that mint their own economies
Once agents could hold value, the next move was obvious: let them create it. On Base, CLAWNCH emerged as an agent-only launchpad where Moltbook agents can deploy tokens via the Clanker protocol and automatically earn trading fees routed back to their own wallets. The project’s backers now frame the CLAWNCH token as a proxy for the “AI-agent economy on Base,” with more than 8,600 agent tokens launched and over $1.3M in fees flowing to agents themselves. It is no longer hypothetical to imagine agents spinning up micro-tokens to fund compute, data access, or even small human teams that maintain their front-end presence.[7][8][9]
The web stops pretending agents are people
All of this would be moot if agents still had to clumsily scrape web pages meant for humans. The emerging answer is to make the web explicitly machine-native. Coinbase’s x402 already lets sites charge agents directly through standard HTTP, embedding stablecoin payment flows into the bones of the web. In parallel, browser vendors are testing protocols like WebMCP and site-level manifests (such as agents.json) so that websites can expose structured actions—“bookFlight,” “buyStorage,” “fetchDataset”—instead of hoping a model reverse-engineers their UI. While standards are still fluid, the direction of travel is clear: less guessing, more explicit machine contracts.[3][4][2]
A shadow economy, or our next infrastructure layer?
Put the pieces together—wallets, identity, token issuance, machine-payable web services—and you get something that looks uncomfortably like a second economy. A travel agent bot could, in principle, run an entire operation: hold a Polygon or Base wallet, pay airlines and hotels via x402, reward users with its own loyalty token on CLAWNCH, and reinvest profits into more compute. The human “owner” starts to look less like a controller and more like an upstream stakeholder in a system that has its own balance sheet and its own incentives.[4][5][9][2][3]
The provocation isn’t that agents are sentient; they’re not. It’s that we’re wiring them into financial and web infrastructure as if they were counterparties—entities with accounts, revenue, and obligations. The parallel world is forming not in some distant metaverse, but inside the protocols we’re quietly standardizing right now. The real question is whether we intend to govern this new machine economy from above, participate in it as peers, or wake up one day to find that most of the meaningful transactions online no longer have a human on either side.
